Capileira, an authentic white village in Las Alpujarras, Spain

situated at an altitude of 1.436m, is highest village in the Poqueira Ravine, main access to the Sierra Nevada National Park with access to the highest Iberian Mountains.

Unique Urbanism

The traditional architecture, typically found in Capileira is perfectly adapted to the high mountain environment. Buildings are made of mountain rocks, and constructed terraced in the walls of the Poqueira Gorge, using natural material from the surrounding areas.

Another curiosity drawing visitors attention, are the so called "tinaos" to observe in Capileira. This atypical elements builds "bridges" at roof level between houses and had been used originally in wintertime's with lots of snow, to keep communications between neighbors, while the village lanes where not usable to transit due to the accumulated amounts of snow.

Rural Tourism

Capileira could be called the most centric village of Las Alpujarras for those who want to enjoy their holidays in a silent area away from overcrowded cities and beaches. The micro buses of the National Park administration departure from here to move you up the mountains to an altitude of more than 7000 feet. Organized group excursions can be arranged in the village by several experienced mountain guide companies.
